Dear all,

As we approach the RGS-IBG Annual Conference 2025 in August, the UGRG are running a writing competition for postgraduate students.

The theme for the competition is creative urban geographies and urban geographies of creativity. The topic is chosen based on this year’s conference theme and in parallel with two paper sessions convened by UGRG at the conference.

Guidelines:

  1. This competition is open to PhD students enrolled in any UK university.
  2. Entries can be reflective, analytical, or creative.
  3. The maximum word limit is 2,000 words.
  4. The maximum number of images used in this entry is four images. Make sure to pay attention to copyright and fair use guidelines, ensuring you have appropriate permissions for all images.
  5. Participants are accountable for the originality, validity, and integrity of the content of their submissions. If any form of Artificial Intelligence is used in the writing entry, participants must clearly indicate where and how it was utilised.
  6. Entries should be sent to Farhan  Anshary at f.anshary2@newcastle.ac.uk and cc Joseph Zhao at jhszhao@cantab.net. Please put an email subject “2025 UGRG Blog Competition – Full name.” Entries are preferably sent in .docx format to allow editing.
  7. Deadline: Sunday 9 August 2025, 23:59 BST
  8. All qualified entries will be posted in our Postgraduate Blog of our UGRG website (https://ugrg.co.uk/). Three best entries will be awarded, with £100 for the winner and £50 for each runner-up.
